GoEun Museum of Photography is celebrating its 10th anniversary with "The Beginning and Beginning" project in 2017 to 2018, marking yet another start as it commemorates the moment of its first beginning. The integrated project will present a vision for the new future, as it looks back at the last 10 years of GoEun Museum of Photography, while it recalls Korean photography over the years from an art historical point of view. Heeseung Chung is the participant of Interim Report 2017. GoEun Museum of Photography’s yearly exhibition of Interim Report reviews the accomplishments of selected photographers in their 40s in order to establish a system prompting progress of Korean photography. Photographers at this age are positioned in between the masters and the new talents, but they are the main force contributing to the expansion of photography spectrum in Korea. GoEun Museum of Photography wishes to provide an opportunity to these photographers who are facing an important moment of their lives to look back at their past works, in order to pursue and set up a new direction for their future work. In this exhibition the artist becomes a leader of the project to review one’s own work and suggest subsequent projects.

Heeseung Chung has explored consistently inherent significance of the subjects and their other significances. If there's an element she cares about the most when it comes to exhibiting the directionality of her projects, it must be the composition of space and place, as well as the arrangement and layout. Her latest exhibition Interim Report 2017 Stanza displays major works by Chung, and ponders upon the photographic exploration she has pursued until now. Inspired by Giorgio Agamben's book, the title “Stanza” can be interpreted as 'the dwelling and receptacle of poetry and the core containing all types of thinking' and also as 'something hidden between the lines of a poem'. There is no other title as perfect as this one for Chung, who from the photographic border line explores the limits of photography as well as its potential. She exposes the surface of photography as an incomplete tool of representation while at times concealing it, and offers us magnificent scenes regardless of her intentions.

GoEun Museum of Photography's fifth Interim Report Stanza, is composed in three sections. <Still life> shows a daily space like the interior of a studio and objects within, and rearranges them into unfamiliar images and a single objet: <Rose is a rose is a rose> serially captures the rose in an identical frame to explore the relationship between image and text, and the impossibility of significance; <Inadequate metaphors> uses stylistic composition of botanic gardens and partial body parts in prominent poses to display the intersecting point of different sequences. Rather than making strong self-statements, her work talks about photographic surfaces and space in a poetic way. They are images that are flat yet deep, empty yet full, familiar yet distant from the subject. In that context, her work maintains proportion and balance to pursue form and rhythm, and perhaps it can be named 'Poetics of the Surface', as the photographic surface showing the boundary and chasm with the deep inner side. Therefore void is as important as well composed spaces in her images. It should be noted Chung's work in such diverse colors and keywords is created with active intervention and intention of the artist

Stanza newly composes and arranges Chung's works from the past and rather than questioning what is photography, it asks what can be done with it. Through them the viewers are invited to critically contemplate on the relationship between inside and surface, image and text, and hidden and exposed. Such photographic attitude is the core element that makes us continuously look forward to Heeseung Chung's project
